Ideology 
At the time all of this was happening, there were countless other people who were finding themselves among the internet. While there are of course tons of political content– the Capitol Hill community on Geocities was focused on it– we can also find hints of anti anarchist sentiment within the comments on message boards. While forums might be more curated and delete uneccessary or hateful comments, message boards are meant for opinions, good and bad.
On ANARCHY AND CHAOS, we can find a few people either disagreeing with the ideology overall or how the owner interprets it:

Pretty sure you have to still get popular support for anarchism to do collective action, unsure why they're so upset about a website.

On another site, Infoshop, the message board has some more interesting things to read. These are actually the funniest messages I think I've ever seen. Why are people so dramatic? Oh well, it's not like present day twitter isn't the same.

Overall it seems for the most part that messages that contain criticisms are more often than not hate mail. To be fair, Infoshop published drawings mocking soldiers in Iraq so of course some bootlickers will come out of the woodwork. Otherwise, there is definitely some comments from anarchists themselves, or communists or people who agree somewhat with the ideology but can't like all of it– they tend to just be critical of the ways in which anarchism is defined and acted on. But the vast, vast majority was just people who didn't understand what anarchism was and didn't like the nonconformity and disregard for social norms. Aside from offensive content, it is still surprising to me partially that so many people were incensed enough to send nasty things, let alone for some of them to read any articles in the first place. Clearly though given very obvious signs within their hate messages and the responses from the owners, they barely read, if at all. The mishandling of anarchism is somehow still prevalent even when the actual ideology is right in front of you.
One thing I noticed though was that a lot of individuals were mentioning the woes of surveillance and technology. In the letters many students would explain how their schools watched over their shoulders, allotted computer time to a few hours and blocked 'bad' sites. I think, while fear of surveillance surely was a worry, the bigger issue at the time was getting people on the internet and be able to access the vast troves of information it contained. The ability to utilize technology and work around its flaws seemed to be the approach, rather than avoiding it in the first place. This makes sense especially for anarchists who have had small local groups and not much of a unified, large presence in the modern day. But, with technology came even more repression, oppression and restriction which people began to recognize.
